Javier Aguirre Clears the Air on Álvaro Fidalgo and Julián Quiñones in the Mexican National Team

The head coach of Mexico, Javier Aguirre, was straightforward when discussing the potential call-up of Álvaro Fidalgo to the TRI. In his latest press conference, the 'Vasco' made it clear that the Spanish midfielder from Club América is still not eligible to represent Mexico due to the requirements set by FIFA for switching national teams.

“Álvaro is eligible starting February 2026, so everything else is just rumors,” Aguirre stated. While he acknowledged the player's great qualities and left the door open for a future call-up, he emphasized that, for now, there's nothing more to discuss regarding his case.

The Naturalization Process and FIFA's Requirements

Fidalgo, a Real Madrid youth product and a key player in América's recent titles, has already obtained his Mexican passport, sparking rumors of a possible call-up. However, FIFA requires a player to complete a residency period in the country before switching federations, a requirement the América midfielder has yet to fulfill.

The Mexican National Team has a history with naturalized players, so Fidalgo's case is being closely watched. Nonetheless, Aguirre made it clear that no decision will be made regarding his inclusion in the national team until the regulations allow it.

Aguirre Clears Up Doubts About Julián Quiñones

Besides discussing Fidalgo, the Mexican coach took the opportunity to clarify the situation of Julián Quiñones, another naturalized player who has been on the Tri's radar. Recently, there were speculations that Aguirre had doubts about calling him up due to conduct issues, but the coach denied those claims.

“I have a very good relationship with Julián and his coach Míchel González. I maintain regular communication with him, asking how Julián is doing, where he plays. I've also spoken with Julián; he had the misfortune of getting injured, we sent him back, and then we couldn't call him up. He's a player on our radar, and I'm very happy for him,” Aguirre assured.

Quiñones' Current Form in Saudi Arabia

The strategist also highlighted Quiñones' performance in Saudi Arabia, where he has become his team's top scorer and competes in the scoring charts with stars like Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. Although the Saudi league isn't the most competitive in the world, Aguirre believes the forward's level remains high and that his performance is positive for the Mexican National Team.
