Chelsea Fans Make Their Minds Up on Liam Delap After First Chelsea Club World Cup Start
Chelsea fans have been quick to share their thoughts on social media about Liam Delap after the former Ipswich Town man made his first start for his new club during their Club World Cup defeat to Brazilian giants Flamengo. Delap impressed during his debut cameo in the win over LAFC earlier this week, even grabbing an assist for Enzo Fernandez's close-range finish.
His efforts saw him handed a starting berth by Enzo Maresca in what was a far more feisty affair than the Blues' competition opener. And supporters were quick to react to what they saw from the budding English starlet.
Delap Shines Despite Chelsea's Woes
The striker continued to show potential despite the result
Statistically speaking, Delap's showing in Philadelphia appeared to leave a lot to be desired. The striker registered just one shot on target, with his other attempt being blocked - both chances going down as big ones missed. He also managed just 15 touches on the ball, completing only six of his nine passes and losing possession on five occasions.
It didn't get much better for the Englishman in duels and take-ons either, as he was only successful in one dribble attempt and lost four of his five duels before being substituted in the 64th minute, replaced by Nicolas Jackson - who was subsequently sent off just four minutes after coming on.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Liam Delap has now not scored in any of his last nine senior matches.
Yet, despite his efforts on the ball not being much to write home about, that didn't stop Chelsea fans from signing his praises online - predominantly for his attitude throughout proceedings.
"Loved this game so far, fiery, Delap feels really right feels like he fits the club to me, so funny people saying the players don't care about this cup when you’ve watched this tournament so far," wrote one supporter on X, while another stated: "If you don’t see it with Delap I don’t know what to tell you."
A third added: "Liam Delap’s hold-up play, pace + power, s***housery…He screams 'Chelsea striker," while a fourth claimed: "Seen enough. Delap will succeed here."
