Liverpool fans furious as 'play should have been stopped' as Man Utd silence Anfield
Liverpool fans were left furious after Manchester United took the lead in the second minute of their Premier League clash.
The Anfield faithful had barely stopped their rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before they were left in stunned silence after Bryan Mbeumo blasted the ball past Giorgi Mamardashvili in the second minute of their crunch clash.
However, that silence quickly turned into fury with Alexis Mac Allister down near the centre-circle holding his head. Replays of the incident showed Virgil van Dijk had clattered into the back his team-mate - causing the injury.
The word we are getting from the match centre is that the referee didn't see the injury and therefore couldn't stop the game," Peter Drury explained on Sky Sports.
And Jamie Carragher hit back: "He was on the floor holding his head."
Carragher had already pointed out: "I think a lot of players have taken advantage of the head injury rule.
"There was a situation in the Arsenal game yesterday where Arsenal were unfortunate when the Fulham player went down and I'm surprised Michael Oliver hasn't pulled that back with a head injury."
And Liverpool fans agreed with their former star on social media.
"Ref 'didn't see' the fact Mac Allister had a head injury despite being on the floor holding his head," one fan fumed.
"Michael Oliver is a disgrace of a referee for not stopping play because of a head injury," a second said. While a third posted: "Yes, the referee should have stopped the game, but you play to the whistle. Always play to the whistle. It’s something we seem to have forgotten this season."
And another added: "Also, there was a head injury. The referee apparently didn't see it. Even if it was caused by a teammate, the match should have been stopped, I think!"
